Products I Use
This page includes a number of the supplies, materials, & tools I use in my making process. I like to shop locally for my materials as much as possible & support businesses that make high quality products that will last a long time. I'm happy to share as much as I can about my making process to help customers & fellow makers understand how I source all of my materials and where they can find them all.
Clay
I use Kentucky Mudworks for the majority of my clay needs, based in Lexington, KY. They have a number of low-fire, mid-fire, and high-fire clays. My personal favorite is the mid-range white stoneware called Iceman without grog. I use it for all of my white clay pieces. The other clay I use is from Laguna Clay, based in Lockerbie, OH for clay manufacturing. I use their WC-608 speckled tan mid-range clay for my slowly emerging line of speckled work. I buy all of my clay from my local pottery supply shop Queen City Clay in Cincinnati, OH. |
Glazes
I mix up the majority of my cone 5-6 glazes from public recipes I've compiled for about a decade. I'm happy to share specific recipes I use if you email me on the Contact page.
I use a few commercial glazes including the following:

Underglazes
I have a great relationship with the folks at Speedball Ceramics and exclusively use their underglazes. I regularly use black slip for my black and white sgraffito pieces, but all colored sgraffito pieces use Speedball's vast collection of underglazes. See all of their underglaze offerings in their website and some examples with their products below. I'm also part of Speedball's Professional Artist Network as well.

Tools
Carving tools
I have a good relationship with the folks over at Diamond Core Tools to handle all of my sgraffito process, including mugs, bowls, oil bottles, vases, & plates. They are so sharp and allow me to make very clean cuts for the look I'm trying to achieve. See some examples on the images above alongside the Speedball underglazes. My favorite Diamond Core carving tools are the P3 (Curved XL U Tip 6mm) and the P1 (Curved V Tip). I also own and occasionally use the P10, P8U, & trimming tools.
Trimming tools
I have a variety of trimming tool, but my most used trimming tool has to be the Mudtools Do-All Trim Tool. It's great for a variety of forms I need to trim (bowls & plates mainly) and does a good job of staying firm and controlled in my hand. I also use some Kemper and Diamond Core trimming tools on occasion.
